Open a PDF in your browser when you cannot install a reader
Some school and work machines block desktop PDF readers. Preview PDF opens the file in your browser so you can check pages before you edit, compress or send it.

What Preview is for
Preview PDF is a viewer, not an editor. Use it to confirm you downloaded the right file, that pages are upright, and that nothing obvious is missing — especially on Chromebooks, kiosks and locked corporate laptops.
The file is read in your browser. Closing the tab clears the working copy from memory.
Step by step
A short check before you share or process a file:
- 1Open Preview PDF and drop the PDF.
- 2Page through the document and zoom if text looks small.
- 3If pages are sideways, leave Preview and use Rotate PDF.
- 4If you need annotations or signatures, open PDF Editor instead.
- 5If the portal has a size limit, use Compress PDF after you confirm the content.
Preview vs Editor vs Compress
Preview only views. PDF Editor adds text, highlights, signatures and page changes. Compress PDF reduces file size for upload limits. Start with Preview when you only need to look; switch tools when you need to change the file.
Troubleshooting
Common blockers:
- Password-protected PDF: unlock it first with a password you know, then preview.
- Blank or broken page: the file may be corrupt — try re-downloading the original.
- Need offline later: this site can cache a light shell after a prior visit, but tool engines are not guaranteed offline.
Privacy and security
Preview PDF runs in your browser. The file is loaded into memory on your device, processed locally, and offered as a download. WordToPDFHub does not receive the document.
Local processing still means you should follow your school or workplace rules about which tools you may use for confidential material.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. This tool runs inside your browser, so your document stays on your device. (The separate AI tools are the exception: they send extracted text — not the file — to an AI provider, and say so before you start.)
- Is the tool really free?
- Yes. The tools are free to use with no watermarks and no sign-up. Each file can be up to 200 MB; very large documents also depend on your device's memory.
- Can I edit text in Preview?
- No. Use PDF Editor or PDF Text Edit when you need changes.
- Does Preview work on phones?
- Yes in modern mobile browsers. Very large PDFs may load slowly on older phones.
